ALCEST - By Chris Dick

French undergroundist gets his black metalgaze on

“I’ve never been influenced by shoegaze since I did not know this kind of music when I wrote Le Secret and Souvenirs D’un Autre Monde,” claims Alcest mainman Neige. “One day a friend said me, ‘Hey, do you know Slowdive and My Bloody Valentine? Alcest is very close to them in a way.’ Now, I really like these great bands, but Alcest in its primary aims and sources of inspiration had absolutely nothing to do with them. This resemblance is a pure coincidence in fact.” While it’s easy to find sonic similarities between Alcest and some of shoegaze’s finest, behind the gauzy/shimmering guitars, fey vocals and rhythmic pitter-patter, it’s probably just as accurate to compare Souvenirs D’un Autre Monde to Agalloch’s The Mantle or Ulver’s black metal-lite moments on Bergtatt.

But when labeling Alcest black metal, Neige is quick to react. “Black metal is rich enough to express a wide variety of themes and soundings, but, in my opinion, it always has to stay in a dark register. For example, many black metal bands use industrial or electronic elements, but they keep dealing with dark concepts. Since Alcest’s feelings are certainly not obscure, my project can’t be categorized as belonging to that type of music. Ethereal metal would be more appropriate.” The distinction, however, between Alcest and creator Neige’s other projects—he moonlights in cult black metal act Peste Noire and avant-black outfit Amesoeurs—is that musically, lyrically and conceptually it’s based on a parallel universe to the one inhabited by black metal’s sacrosanct, yet myopic values. Souvenirs D’un Autre Monde is bright, warm and verdant like a lazy Sunday morning in May. Songs like “Printemps Emeraude,” “Les Iris” and “Sur L’autre Rive Je T’attendrai” uplift the spirit, embracing it with positivity and innocence. “It is based upon a mix between sadness and strong hope,” he confirms, “a very ambiguous feeling that’s hard to describe. Alcest is never melancholic in a depressive and unhealthy way; the emotion expressed is sweeter and almost pleasant to feel. Alcest could not be negative or connected to any suffering in life. It is not the project’s aim.”

It would be hard to hear misery or enmity in Alcest’s music. Even if it’s in French or some other language (both “Les Iris” and “Tir Na Nog” employ glossolalia à la Cocteau Twins), the impression is something rather unique. “There is a particular meaning behind my vocal approach,” Neige says. “I have been using them since Le Secret in order to reproduce the fairy-like chants I perceived in my visions of Alcest’s realm; distant ethereal voices. Moreover, I simply could not imagine black metal vocals or powerful pop-rock vocals on my songs. It would not be appropriate.”

VENOM - 2005 - MMV [Download]

When most people think of Black Metal, corpse-paint and church burning Norwegians come to mind these days, but Venom really originated something unique for that genre, laying down the foundation for many imitators and admirers alike.... yet Venom manages to remain in a class all its own. Truly, the fore-fathers of Black Metal, a term non-existent before their emergence, who at least entertainment-wise, have given The Devil His due.

While not actual Satanists, Venom has served to veritably "open the gate" for diabolical expression in the Metal arena, and the degree of their sinister stage show remains unmatched, even comparable to KISS presentations.

MMV contains two decades of infernal evilution. Rare remixes, out-takes, interviews, rare singles, and live performance recordings are herein. A collection of which a member of 'The Legions' would have had to have incrementally possessed from obscure as well as international sources. A "7 Dates of Hell" poster is included along with a lavish 59-page booklet including an original introduction by Cronos, many informational tidbits, print interviews, numerous news clippings, flyers, album art work, and rare photographs.

Disc 1 contains outtakes, demos, bonus tracks, and singles from 'Welcome To Hell, 'Black Metal', and 'Possessed'. The entire 'At War With Satan' album comprises disc 2, some inclusions from 'From Hell to The Unknown', radio / TV spots, and a studio interview. Disc 3 contains a combination of bonus tracks, live material, and outtakes from 'Calm Before The Storm', 'Prime Evil', and 'Cast In Stone'. Along with this splendid compilation, Disc 4 contains recordings from the legendary Hammersmith Odeon concerts, thusfar only available on 'The 7 Dates of Hell' and 'Alive in '85' VHS tapes, and portions from the various 'Assault' series, now all available on one CD.

The CD's themselves feature impressive renderings of each character of this infernal trinity poised within the customized Baphomet, including a horned, demon-winged, fanged Cronos in hellish rictus.

Distinct from the core releases, MMV is essentially a complimentary musickal accumulation of all those singles, rare picture discs, outtakes, and live recordings which complete the "Venomist's" nefarious compendium.

Voice Of A Tortured Skull

Iv decided to write this article on this particular band because of the impact this band made on the 2nd Wave of Black Metal, the most extreme subgenre of Heavy Metal and which was concieved in Norway and who were labeled as "Norwegian Black Metal" or "Norsk Arisk Black Metal" (which was around from 1989-1995). And not forgeting the impact they made on me many years back, when i found myself listening to the album "Wolf's Lair Abyss". A CD-R i borrowed from a friend, which is still with me today.

It wasnt easy getting into this band... as i was used to much less "noise" and it had only 5 tracks. counting the weird intro. But the more i listened to the album, the more it felt "right" as if it were the only thing iv been searching for in metal. I began to fall in love with this cd as i started to listen to this album day and night. It was an mp3 really. With "Wolf's Lair Abyss" and some other albums in it. I quickly made an Audio copy of it (Dont really know where THAT is). Anyways, i started searching for more information about this album through my friends who were into this type of music (i still didnt know the name of the band mind you). I didnt know who the hell the band were, where they were from or when exaclty this album was recorded. Nothing at all. All i had was "Wolf's Lair Abyss". After months and months of no luck i finally found out the name of this band and origin. A band called "Mayhem" from Norway. Well they certainly lived up to their name.

As time passed i began to recieve more and more information about "Mayhem". Murders and Satanic Rituals were among the various things i heard about them. After some time i familiarized myself with the Internet Downloading process. After scooting from school one morning i went to an Internet Cafe, 2 bus halts before the Dehiwala junc, and i downloaded an album entitled "De Mysteriis Dom Satanas" (which translates to "Lord satans' secret files". A book, which only one copy was rumoured to exist) which was recorded around 1992-1993. Quickly made an audio copy of it, got a printout of the track list and went home as i couldnt wait to listen to this album.

As i put "De Mysteriis Dom Satanas" into my discman and pressed the "Play" button (it was an old peice of shit, didnt have the "Auto-play" function) the haunting melodies and the blast beats of "Funeral Fog" fills the air. After about 1:30 minutes i begin to hear Attila Csihar's (i dont want to call it a Screach, more like a vomitish groan) vocals "Every time this year, This dark fog will appear, Up from the tombs it comes, To take one more life that can be near". As the song continued, Hellhammer's drumming, Attila's Vocal capabilities started to impress me. Then began the 2nd song of the album "Freezing Moon". A slow/mid paced track (the slowest track on the album i think) which is joined by a blast beat after about 1:40 minutes, which is where is the vocals begin "Everything here is so cold, Everything here is so dark, I remember it as from a dream, In the corner of this time". The blast beat continues till again when the song changes into a very slow pace riffing and drumming. Then comes Euronymous's solo, an undescriptive feeling rose inside me, as if blessing me with hope and despair simultaneously. Taking my spirit high into the atmosphere. As the solo ends Attila's "vomitish groans" could be heard.. "Darkness is growing, The eternity opens, The cemetery lights up again, As in ancient times, Fallen souls die behind my steps, By following the freezing moon".. and the slow paced track suddenly shifts into a blast beat which takes us to the end of "Freezing Moon" and to the start off of "Cursed In Eternity". Another fast paced track which explores a very dark and gloomy atmosphere, "My name was written with, Fire in the place you only can see, When your time has come, When you walk down in the, Land of shadows for eternity". Which brought me to the fourth track of the album, "Pagan Fears", as a familiar sound started to reach my ears, was trying to figure out why this song sounded really really familiar as iv never listened to this album before. After doing some research i got to know that the reason behind the familiarity is that i have listened to a cover version of this song done by Dark Funeral on their "Teach Children To Worship Satan" album before. This track flows in the same vein as the opening track of the album "Funeral Fog", starts with a catchy riff and beat. A Black Metal Classic without a doubt. The fifth track of the album "Life Eternal" opens up with a classic blast beat, which then blends into a mid paced beat. Euronymous's murder's (Varg's) Bass melodies could be heard very clearly at this point of the song. And ofcourse Dead's (Per Ygnve Ohlin) well written lyrics contribute to the haunting atmophere this song produced, "I am a mortal, but am I human?, How beautiful life is now when my time has come, A human destiny, but nothing human inside, What will be left of me when I'm dead?, There was nothing when I lived". The 6th track of the album "From The Dark Past" opens with a mid paced guitar riff but is quickly shifted into a blast beat setting the mood for the song. Then the song suddenly rests on guitars and drums rolls here and there giving the song a very ambient touch and then shifting the song into a midpaced beat. Snorre Ruch's (Blackthorn) and Øystein Aarseth's (Euronymous) guitar work should be complimented here. Track #7 "Buried By Time And Dust" follows in the same vein as the opening track of the album "Funeral Fog". Another fast paced track which certainly lives up to their name. Hellhammer's talents are once again flaunted all over this track. The end of this track brings us to the title track, which is my favourite song from this album (Favourite Mayhem track ever??) and as many say the track which defines "Mayhem". As i heard the opening riffs on this song, the hair on my arm and neck began to rise. As the blast beat begins Attila's "vomitish groan" is heard, "To the elder ruins again, The wind whispers beside the deep forest, Darkness will show us the way". Once again Mayhem manages to take you to another level, another level of consciousness and existance. Jan Axel's (Hellhammer) fast drumming, Euronymous's haunting guitar melodies, Attila's Groans blended with clean vocals, and lyrics which were based upon a satanic ritual which was being performed by a group of men, and Varg's bass guitar (which Hellhammer reduced the volume on the final product) contributed to a very sinister and thereputic final product with the duration of 6:22 minutes of therapy and pure mayhem. "The books blood written pages open, Invoco Crentus Domini De Daemonium, We follow with our white eyes, The ceremonial proceeding,
Rex Sacriticulus Mortifer, In the circle of stone coffins, We are standing with our black robes on, Holding the bowl with unholy water"

As the cd ended, i was left with a state of emptiness, Physically and Mentally numb. Unable to think or act for a few minutes i some how gathered energy and once again, pressed the button "play". Hypnosis all over again.

As time passed, i began researching about my new found "drug". What was the story behind this band who's music managed to inspire me and show me a new ray of hope? And after months of research Mayhem revealed its ugly history.....

Mayhem was formed in 1984 by guitarist Oystein Aarseth (who at that time had embraced the pseudonym "Destructor"), Jorn Stubberud (Necrobutcher) on Bass, Kjetil Manheim (Manheim) on Drums and Eirik Nordheim (Messiah) on vocals. The name "Mayhem" was taken off a track entitled "Mayhem with Mercy" by British black metal band Venom.

Around 1985 Demo cd "Pure Fucking Armagaddon" was recorded. Sven Erik Kristiansen (Maniac) joined Mayhem replaced Messiah on vocals. And demo's along with the EP "Deathcrush" was recorded.

Around 1987 both Maniac and Manheim had left Mayhem. And due to a failed suicide, Maniac got himself shipped off to a mental institute. After some time, Torben Grue and Kittil from Vomit joins the ranks of Mayhem for a short while.

1988 arrives as Mayhem recruites Hellhammer (Jan Axel) as Drummer and Dead(Per Yngve Ohlin), previously of Swedish death metal band "Morbid" to handle vocal duties. Dead was very melancholic by nature and was fascinated by death. According to Bard Eithun "He (Dead) wasn't a guy you could know very well. I think even the other guys in Mayhem didn't know him very well. He was hard to get close to. I met him two weeks before he died. I'd met him maybe six to eight times, all in all. He had lots of weird ideas. I remember Aarseth was talking about him and said he did not have any humour. He did, but it was very obscure. Honestly, I don't think he was enjoying living in this world." Dead was rumoured to bury his clothes underground months before shows and wear the decaying rags on stage, and he was also rumoured to carry around a dead animal in a plastic bag, which he inhaled everytime before going onstage. Around this time Mayhem started to live up to their name during their shows which had rotting pig heads on stakes in front of the stage, and Dead mutilating himself.

1990 arrives as the tracks "Freezing Moon" and "Carnage" are recorded for the CBR Compilation. This year also marks the recording of Mayhem's live concert "Live in Leipzig" which was recorded in Germany. And also Mayhem starts working on their first full length album, "De Mysteriis Dom Satanas"

On the 12th of April, 1991, Dead was found dead with slit wrists and a shotgun wound in his head in his apartment. A suicide note was found at the scene which simply read "Excuse all the blood". Euronymous who found the body had driven to Oslo to buy a disposable camera to photograph Dead's body. The picture was later used as the cover for the bootleg "Dawn Of The Black Hearts" which contained live auido tracks which were recorded at a gig in Sarpsborg in 1990 where Dead had to be rushed to a hospital after the show due to blood loss because he cut him self up with a broken glass badly, and tracks from a gig with their previous memeber, Maniac. Euronymous is also rumoured to have eaten a part Dead's brain and made necklaces out of Dead's skull fragments. Morgan S. Hakansson from Marduk and Tony Sarkka of Abruptum are rumoured to have peices of Dead's skull fragments.

The shotgun shells which were used in Dead's suicide were sent to him by Kristian Vikernes (aka Varg Vikernes, Count Grishnackh) of Burzum.

Around this time Occultus joins the band as vocalist and Necrobutcher leaves Mayhem, Leaving the Bassist slot empty.

1993 arrives as the bootleg "Live In Leipzig" is released and was dedicated to Dead. And the recording of "De Mysteriis Dom Satanas" begins as Attila joins Mayhem to undertake vocal responsibilities and Varg Vikernes fills the empty slot of Necrobutcher as Bass guitarist.

Euronymous is forced to close down his shop "Helvete" owing Varg Vikerness 30, 000 NOK( according to rumours). Which was argued in public on several occations.

On the 10th of August 1993, Euronymous is stabbed 23 times to the neck, head and back, which according to Varg, he got from falling on peices on broken glass from a lamp which was broken during the fight. And Varg himself states that Euronymous didnt die of blood loss, it was a shot to his skull that killed him.
Get to know what Varg says in his own words HERE

With only the existance of just one member (Hellhammer), Mayhem ceased to exist.

"De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas" is released, and is dedicated to Euronymous. The reason behind the delay of releasing the album was that Euronymous' parents demands that the album not feature bass parts by his murderer, Varg Vikernes. Hellhammer had promised to remove the bass parts but had not, instead he lowered the volume of the bass played by Vikernes on the final mix as he believed that the murderer and the victim should be together on this album. The cover of the album shows the Nidaros Cathedral which is considered the most significant church of Norway.

Around this time Hellhammer reforms Mayhem. With Blasphemer (Rune Erickson) from the band "Aura Noir" and their former members Maniac and Necrobutcher.

1996 arrives as Mayhem releases the "Freezing Moon" picture LP and the rehersal "Out From The Dark"

1997 marks the release of the 1st album with their new lineup "Wolf's Lair Abyss" (the first Mayhem album i listened to). And "Mediolanum Capta Est" bootleg was recorded during a live show in Milan with guest vocals by Maniac.

Nordgaren joins Mayhem as session rythem guitarist during "Mayhem Invades England" tour.

1998 arrives as "Ancient Skin/Necrolust" single is released. Nordgaren stays on during Mayhem rehearsals, later leaves Mayhem when he moves to England.

1999 arrives as the bootleg "Mediolanum Capta Est" is released. And also the year which marks the release of the Split 7" with Zyklon-B.

2000 marks the release of the album "Grand Declaration of War" which was influenced by Progressive elements and which was based on themes dealing with themes of war and post-apocalyptic destruction. Alot of electonic elements are included in this album as well.

2001 arrives as "European Legions: Live In Marseille" is released on VHS/DVD, also as limited edition CD. "European Legions" and "U.S. Legions" are released.

2002 arrives as a "Split 7inch w/ Meads Of Asphodel" is released, later released on CD with bonus tracks.

2004 marks the return of the band with yet another studio effort entitled "Chimera". Which showed signs of a return to the earlier raw style. Around this time Maniac is kicked out of Mayhem to be replaced with Attila.

2007 once again marks the release of "Ordo Ad Chao". A latin verse which simply translates to "Out of Chaos, Comes Order) often cited as the motto used in Freemasonry. It is the first Mayhem album to feature vocalist Attila Csihar since the 1994 release, De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas. Ordo Ad Chao's production quality is very raw as the track "Illuminate Eliminate" is Mayhem's 2nd longest song ever.

The album charted at #12 in Norway, making it the band's highest charting album yet, and many consider it the band's greatest work since De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas.

Mayhem, as a band have come along way, as you can see. Iv found my self in countless descussions debating weather the new Mayhem album can be considered "tr00 kvlt Black Metal" or discussions debating the authenticity of their "Image". Debate all you want, I dont give a flying fuck anymore. Cause im one amongst millions of others who have been inspired by their music. And i dont care what anyone says, "De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas" never fails to give me that tingle in my skin i feel when i listen to it. Long live Dead! Long live Euronymous! Long live Mayhem!

I have added some albums reeased by Mayhem here for download. If you like the album, please support the artist by purchasing the cd. Enjoy.

Mythological Occult Black Metal - ABSU

Before the proclamation of the abysmal genesis, this "Mythological Occult" from Dallas, Texas was born in 1989 under the title of "Dolmen." Originally constituted by Equitant Ifernain (Electric Lead Guitar, Bass Guitar, Backing Voice, & Lyrical Obscurity) and Shaftiel (Electric Lead Guitar, Bass Guitar, Acoustics, Mouth Harp, & Voice), these two Former blood-tyrants knew the time had come for the ancient monument of Dolmen to collapse. Now, the time had come for the waves of ABSU to ascend.

ABSU, which is recognized as the "blackened Earth/nether world ocean (Mesopotamia)" or "Cythraul (Celticae)," was formed with the release of their first demonstration cassette entitled "Return of the Ancients". The tape fell into the hands of Gothic Records (USA) and granted them the rites in releasing "The Temples of Offal" 7" EP in primordial 1992. Within four months, roughly 2000 copies of "Temples..." were sold on a worldwide basis, giving them a rather commanding response. In the meantime, Equitant and Shaftiel were running into personal differences with various warriors that had previously been in the group, and realized a drastic alteration needed to take place.

The change was made, while the enigma was solved. Magicial extraordinaire Proscriptor McGovern (All Percussives Sequencer/ Mellotran, Voice, & Lyrical Magick), formerly of the insanely supernatural band MAGUS, united with ABSU after the termination of the previous members. As a matter of fact, he served in several bands with Equitant and Shaftiel even before DOLMEN had existed, so destiny had reached their goal. Consequently, Osmose Productions (FRANCE) conglomerated a licensing agreement with Gothic Records for their debut album, "Barathrum: V.I.T.R.I.O.L." in 1993. Afterwards when Cemunnos controlled the Eastern twilight, ABSU even projected an authentic video for the heathenish hymn "Fantasizing To The Third of The Pagan Vision (Quoth The Sky, Nevermore) Act II", which was taken from the "Barathrum..." release.

In April of 1995, the kult was equipped with all the fire and steel in releasing "The Sun of Tiphareth". With a vast demand for their second album, "...Tiphareth" was proclaimed to be one of the most innovative, yet Occultic Death Trash recordings of the '90s era (thus far). The month of April also captured ABSU joining forces with session bassist/vocalist Mezzadurus (BLOODSTORM) for the "Sex, Cyber, & Rock'n Roll" European Tour. With the accompaniment of such insane label mates as IMPALED NAZARENE and SADISTIK EXEKUTION, ABSU had finally proven to the world that their kult saw the human race as being non-existent. In July of 1995, they also had the opportunity to tour with Viking mates ENSLAVED throughout the entire North American continent, which gave them another dominant response as well.

It seems that ABSU is lyrically and poetically indulged by Celtic myths and legends, Azif's theology of the Necronomicon Mesopotamian/Sumerian mythology (.especially under the powers of Dumuzi, Uruk, and the infamous Ugalla-demons), Etymology of Thoth, Tasseomancy, Sorcery, and weaponry skills of Cnihthad. However, the new deliverance of indestructible forces from their Pagan/Gaelic/Glenorchy dynasty shall bring you "The Third Storm of Cythraul" for Osmose Productions once again. Advancing from their immortal spirits onto others, this third album will express battlecraft and ancestral bloodlust in a fashion unimaginable to the human manifestoz. The Primum Mobile of V.I.T.R.I.O.L. is burning, Tiphareth is still shining, and "The Third Storm of Cythraul" will endlessly reign with fea nemon! Chuaigh muid ar na canai areir! Thou shalt continue thy epic of dismal hope in the meantime..."

At this fantasizing narration transcribed from other occult places I can only add that under the invocation of Ioldanch itself on March of the year 1998 according to feeble christians calendar a new spell has been summoned, and In The Eyes of Ioldanach reached the final creation. And now, after having understood and memorized the last Hymn, we wait that Absu trasform into music also their last experiences and visions, giving life to their fourth Opus, which name will be Tara.

Proscriptor's words about the Creation:" Before the Primum Mobile had exploded and Vitriol had spawn a barren stone within this turbid sphere, there was absolute nothingness. In the early portion of 1989, Shaftiel and Equitant had comglomerated mysterical ideologies to form the first band, DOLMEN, which can be defined as "an ancient monument or statue still standing." Before this all occurred, I use to be a part of two other acts consisting of both Shaftiel's and Equitant's guitar talents, which were monickered as the first act of KARNAGE, then secondly KARRION. After two full years of study and research within the metaphysical, yet magical areas of Mesopotamian/Sumerian/Assyrian mythology, the name ABSU came forth and here we stand to this day. The goal and objective behind ABSU's music and scientific theory is to "transform the listener, the indulger's thoughts of imagination into the strongest of poetic content we, as a band, arrange within specific doctrines that have influenced our past immortal spirits the most, which are alchemy, magick, battlecraft, and anestral bloodlust." Up until the epoch of mid-'93, ABSU had a severe time keeping consistent line-ups and the wisest of ALL decisions were made when we narrowed the "Barathrum: V.I.T.R.I.O.L" quintet down to baneful trio. The line-up of ABSU today is thyself, PROSCRIPTOR, in charge of all percussives, voice(s), poetic devices/advices, Mercury, effects, synthesizers, and Cadceus.SHAFTIEL is in charge of all electric B.C. Rich guitars, bass, acoustics, and voice, while EQUITANT handles all electric B.C. Rich/ Voxton guitars, bass, and lyrical obscurities. Basically, this is all the data the human race should be aware of at the present moment. By the way, Shaftiel and I are Gemini forces, as I believe Equitant is a Taurus. Shaftiel and Equitant's past lives originate from Eire (Ireland), as Mine derives from Alba (Scotland). Humans, Critics, Facists, and other cheap mortals like label our klan, our kult, our kreed as a rather "pretentious" one, and that's perfectly fine with us, in our minds to say the least. Why?We are not human - we are not human beings.

Xasthur Discography

Xasthur began in December of 1995, formed by the only real and remaining member Malefic. All that remains from the past are a few rehearsal tapes from 1997 which were awful in quality. All “members” were kicked out, and none have gone on to do anything but drugs, watch television, and eat food.

In 1999, after many struggles with more false members, Xasthur had come to be a two-person entity which included Mike (Ritual) performing drums and vocals, and Malefic performing guitar, bass, and disharmonic dark hymns. A split MCD was more professionally recorded with Orosius. Due to lack of funding and the short running time of the recording (20 minutes), it was deemed not worthy of distributing.Soon after the recording Mike had lost interest in Xasthur and quit.

At that point in time Xasthur had materialised into a one man entity. Malefic had finished work on the first full length CD to be released on an unnamed label, but had folded before it could materialise. Soon after though, ” A Gate Through Bloodstained Mirrors “ was released through Makahru under it's sub-label Profane Productions (limited to 150 copies) on September 11th, 2001.

Reviews of "A Gate Through Bloodstained Mirrors" proved to be positive, comparing Xasthur to old Graveland and Burzum. Malefic believes this to be true, as without Graveland's "Thousand Swords", he would not have been so strongly motivated to create such a depressive sound.Summer/Fall 2002 on Blood Fire Death, Xasthur released "Nocturnal Poisoning", 8 songs (70 minutes) of misanthropic black metal terror bloodstained in misery! Expect better production than Xasthur's first offering.

Also Malefic released a split CD with Acid Enema (Self released).Xasthur will be releasing a 12" mLP on Bestial Onslaught Rec. entitled "Suicide In Dark Serenity 5 songs /28 min. in Nov/Dec.
Xasthur will not quit until the END!!! Xasthur does NOT play "war" metal or "black / death" metal, nor viking or retro trash!!! Just terrifying misanthropic BLACK METAL!!! If the USBM "scene" wants nothing to do with Malefic or Xasthur for this, then FUCK OFF to all of you!!!

WINDIR Discography

Windir is a folkloric black metal band from Sogndal in Norway. Windir used to be a one-man's project and was formed in 1994 by its incontestable sovereign Valfar. Valfar had previously played in a couple of death/black metal bands, but found these projects uninteresting. He decided to form his own band, and as he didn't want anyone else messing up his musical vision, he started Windir as a one-man band. Windir recorded to demos in the period of 1995-96. "Sognariket", and "Det gamle riket". These demos established Windir in the black metal underground through a lot of good reviews. Several labels both Norwegian and foreign produced contract offers, and late 96 Windir signed with the Norwegian label Head not found/Voices of wonder for 2 full-length CD's. The debut CD "Soknardalr" was recorded in Oslo January 97, and it was released in April the same year. The whole recording was done in 4 days. But the production turned out very well with its grim and dark sound. "Soknardalr " showed brilliant composition skills and a refreshing originality, with its mixture of harsh black metal & epic folk melodies. The mighty Valfar handled vocals and all instruments except for the drums himself. "Soknardalr" got a lot of good reviews and sold over 2000 copies within a year.

Immediately after releasing "Soknardalr" Valfar started writing new material for the second full-length CD. The recording of the second CD entitled "Arntor" took place in the legendary "Grieghallen" studio in Bergen in the period of August-October 1998. The famous "Pytten" who had previously produced CDs for bands such as Emperor, Immortal, Burzum, & Mayhem engineered it. " This time Valfar decided to include several session musicians, as the complex music needed utter perfection to justify the material. But the screaming vocals, rhythm guitars, bass, synthesisers and accordion were still handled by the musical gifted Valfar. "Arntor " was released spring/summer in Norway and autumn 1999 in the rest of the world. Arntor showed an impressive progression from its very good predecessor "Soknardalr". The folkloric side of Windir became much stronger on "Arntor", and a couple of tracks were folk tunes rewritten and rearranged by Valfar. But this did not turn the music "soft"; Artnor was without doubt the most aggressive release from Windir so far. The album is a perfect combination of beauty and grim evilness. The response on " Arntor" has been overwhelming, but well deserved. It is obviously one of the most exiting black metal releases ever, and the metal press seems to agree as "Arntor" has received brilliant reviews. The release has sold between over 4000 copies.

With “1184” released in October 2001, a new chapter started in the Windir saga. Windir presented itself as a band. The overwhelming response also put great pressure on Valfar when he started writing for the third release. The philosophy of Valfar is to always achieve more, and create music of utter perfection. Even though Valfar felt there were progression, he thought there were something missing. The answer was to join forces with the composer Hvàll and his band Ulcus, also hailing from Sogndal. Valfar grew up with the Ulcus members, so the merge shouldn’t be any problem as they shared the same mentality and ideas. Valfar and Hvàll composed separately for “1184”, but the material was produced by both of them together to get a similar sound. “1184” has received standing ovation from both reviewers and fans. The old fans don’t seem to have a problem embracing the new music either.

The lyrical aspect of Windir is very special. The lyrics are not only written in Norwegian, but they are written in an ancient version of their local dialect "Saognamaol". The lyrics are utter national romantic and deals with the history of his native village Sogndal. On “1184” the lyrics are both in “Saognamaol” and English. This is due to several factors. Windir wants to reach an larger audience, but also try to give the music a wider spectre, and create other atmospheres. Windir will always have lyrics on “Sognamaol”

28.01.2004

"The loss of our best friend and the founder of Windir have made these last months an extremely hard time. We have decided that Windir will not continue. Valfar created Windir, and we feel that Windir will not be Windir without him.

After encouragement from Valfar’s family, we have decided to release one last Windir CD. This will be a CD in honour of Valfar. It will be a 2 disc CD. The first CD will include new material, unreleased material, tribute songs from other bands and live tracks. The second CD will be a compilation of the great music made by Valfar. It will include tracks from the first demo Sognariket to the last album Likferd. Tabu Records will release the album in August/September 2004. We have decided that all income from this CD will go directly to Valfar’s family.

We also want to thank all friends, fans, bands, labels and magazines that have supported us in these difficult times. Information on future musical projects from Windir members will be announced later. "

On Request

Artist: Silencer

Country: Sweden

Genre: Ambient/Black Metal

Album: Death - Pierce Me (2001)

Sinister. Evil. Insane. Those are the three words that come to mind when I think of Silencer. This black metal outfit from Sweden comes out firing with a full length version of ‘Death – Pierce Me’, three years after their rather unknown demo of the same name. With high-pitched tortured vocals, numerous haunting dark ambient, piano and acoustic interludes, Silencer are able to convey a feeling of sorrow and anguish within their music.

The vocals are by far the most potent and outstanding aspect of this album and frankly, it doesn’t surprise me that Nattramn was institutionalised after this release. His tormented and unsettling vocals are a display of the pure disgust, pain, misery and lunacy that he has most likely been subject to throughout his life. There is no better way to put all these emotions on show than on a black metal album of this type. I guess that these vocals could be put up against the well-respected shrieks of ‘Rainer Landfermann’, in the amount of sheer insanity of the performances.

Sometimes it feels like the instrumental aspects of the music are a bit weak (especially the black metal parts, that seem to quite repetitive after time), putting too much pressure on the Nattramn’s vocals. Luckily enough, his vocal effort is superb but it is still does not prevent this from being the most eminent error on the album. Not only is Nattramn’s vocal act disturbing, but the picture included in the album booklet is one of the most screwed up band member pictures I have ever seen. Nattramn is slouching against a wall, covered in blood and making an unusual hand gesture with his (apparently) disfigured hands. His face is devoid of detail, and is covered with what seems to be blood-soaked corpse paint or bandages.

This is a kind of band picture that even (the old) Mayhem would have been proud of and reflects the pure evil that is ‘Death – Pierce Me’.It’s a shame that this band had to split up after such a fantastic release. This album is highly recommended to fans of unnerved, dark and totally insane black metal. I cannot envision a black metal fan being majorly disappointed by this release.

Black Widow - Sacrifice (1970)

The concept of this album is about a girl named Astaroth, who the last time she was loosed upon the Earth, she posed her con juror's mistress. The poor girl was terribly tormented until, driven insane, she threw herself to her death. The year 1764, over two centuries later, a young occultist, having discovered the power to cast his mind backthrought his previous incarnations, revisits his early life in Egypt and hearing reference to Astaroth by a demon which he conjured all those years ago, he goes on to re-witness the tragic results of his experiment in the 18th century. The songs on the album tells the continuing story... Packed with satanic, mystic, witchcraft lyrics, makes this album the grandfather of all occult rock that has ever followed!

Jacula-In Cauda Semper Stat Venenum(1969)+Tardo Pede in Magiam Versus(1972),LPs,Italy

One of several aggregations of musicians led by Antonio Bartoccetti and Doris Norton (aka Fiamma Dallo Spirito) during the late 1960s/early 1970s, Jacula came together in 1969 around organist Charles Tiring and "medium" Franz Partheny. Relocating from Milan to London, Jacula recorded their debut album that same year - In cauda semper stat venenum was released on the group's own Gnome label in a limited edition of just 300 copies, for distribution to friends and the occult community - the album's subject matter dwelt heavily in that region. Jacula lay silent for much of the next two years, while (Bartoccetti, Norton and Tiring occupied themselves with the bands Dietro Noi Deserto and Invisible Force. In 1972, however, Jacula resurfaced with a new album Tardo Pede in Magiam Versus ("slow steps towards magic"), which included a reprise of the Invisible Force b-side, the apocalyptic "1999 Mundi Finis", now titled "UFDEM". The departure of Tiring during 1972 spelled the end of Jacula; that same year, Bartoccetti and Norton launched a new project, Antonius Rex.~ Dave Thompson, All Music Guide

Mort Garson "Black Mass/ Lucifer" (1971)

"A great proto-prog (okay, okay -- I'm really just making terms up now) Moog album from 1971 that's been fairly well documented elsewhere on the web, this was the brainchild of Mr. Mort Garson, working under the conceptual name of "Lucifer". While I know it's mostly just hard to imagine a major label running with something this "out there" today (making it an excellent companion to Louise Huebner's "Seduction Through Witchcraft" LP from 1969), the real surprise for a lot of the folks I've played it for is the compositional tightness of the songs, and how enjoyably it all works as a whole. Not just a cultural artifact from the early 70's, it's got some genuine creepiness to it as well that could easily be seen as pre-figuring a lot of the sounds Goblin would employ only a few years later. Note: As a bonus for folks who may already have this in their collection I've also included scans of the complete liner notes in with the zip file. Written by Michael Owen Jones Ph.D. (still a professor of History and Folklore at UCLA), they never seem to make the rounds when this record is shared, which is a shame as they're almost half the fun."

Comus - First Utterance [1971]

A six-piece progressvie folk/rock band that certainly lived up to their name. In Greek mythology Comus is the god of revelry, the son of Circe and Bacchus. Comus is also the title of a dramatic poem by the renowned 17th Century English poet, John Milton, and the poem's central theme - female chastity tempted in the archetypal 'wild wood' of moral perplexity by the demonic enchanter, Comus - sets the tone for the album First Utterance.

Antonius Rex - Neque Semper Arcum Tendit Rex (1974)

"Neque Semper is the desire to do, putting one's mystically inquiring super-ego on the top of a mountain and above the mortal beings.I think that Neque semper can be described as a concept coming from the dark of a black and white castle with differently lit rooms.Magic worlds, and self super-ego celebration. The fatal will to condemn the Human lownesses."A.B.

Mort Garson - Ataraxia[The Unexplained - Electronic Musical Impressions of the Occult by Ataraxia] (1975)

Subtitled "Electronic Musical Impressions of the Occult", this album by Ataraxia (meaning: "A spiritual balance, the synonim of a state of perfection that is not possible to be reached by human beings entirely, Ataraxia becomes a state of tension and we try to open our minds to be receptive and perceptive towards the occurings of life.") was an idea to designing music to accompany meditations to the mantra of the listeners choice. This concept became the album The Unexplained. It was the Moog-wizard Mort Garson himself, who followed up his Black Mass album from 1971 with this strange opus. But Garson changed his pseudonym from "Lucifer" to "Ataraxia", and this, his second (and last) occult-themed instrumental Moog-album, was released by RCA in 1975.

COVEN

This album, made by three young students discovering the world of the black arts, is actually a pre-Black Widow's Sacrifice album! The album, gloomy entitled Witchcraft Destroys Minds and Reaps Souls, was out on the American market one year before Black Widow released Sacrifice. Granted, Black Widow was doing Satanic music in 1969 (as evidenced by the recent release of Return to the Sabbat, an unreleased album that is simply a previous recording of the Sacrifice LP they released in 1970) but their material was not commercially avalible at the time. That said; Coven made an album filled with witchcraft related lyrics, mixed with music that was popular at the time, and even with a strange recording of what is rumored to be a real Black Mass at the end...

Coven was formed in the late 1960s in Chicago, Illinois. While studying at North Central High School in Indiana, future lead singer Jinx Dawson had begun singing opera and delving into the occult. Given her excellent singing voice, she got involved in the local rock music scene. She and some classmates began to form rock groups and perform locally. Nothing much came of this, although after graduating high school, Jinx attended Butler University, where she remained involved in the local rock scene. Shortly thereafter Jinx broke away from the local scene, and Indianapolis itself, with two of her bandmates, Steve Ross and Oz Osborne, and headed to Chicago to form Coven. The name obviously had its origins in the medieval superstition of witchcraft; a coven of thirteen witches was a parody of both the nun's covenant and Christ with his twelve disciples. While Coven was not made up of thirteen members, the name aptly described the lyrical content and interests of the band members. Jinx recalls, "The satanic thing actually was something we were interested in and were studying at the time. When you're younger, you're looking for answers, and a lot of members of the band were looking into the same books at the same time. We studied it, we practiced it, but we only went so far. We didn't do anything bad."

The music Coven played was not far removed from the music of bands of the era like Jefferson Airplane, a connection made even more evident with the lead female vocals in both bands. But instead of the peace & love ideals of the turn on, tune in, drop out generation, which other late 60s bands were embracing, Coven's lyrics dealt with Satanism, witchcraft, curses and evil. Aside from the celebrated legend of Robert Johnson, and the occasional song like "That Old Black Magic" by the likes of Frank Sinatra, Satanism and the occult had never been dealt with by popular musicians. The Stones are usually cited as a Satanic band (at least in the later 60s), but their Satanic Majesties Request was a gimmick with no "evil" songs and, despite it's threatening title, "Sympathy For the Devil" had less to do with Satanism and more to do with Mikhail Bulgakov's classic novel about Satan and religion, "The Master and the Margarita". The song's infamous reputation from Altamont (probably) came after Coven's album was released. Black Widow did have music out under the name of Pesky Gee! but it was not Satanic. Coven performed locally in the Chicago area until they attracted the attention of Mercury Records in the fall of 1969. Before the Witchcraft Destroys Minds and Reaps Souls LP, Coven had a 7" single out, the A-side being a cover of Dylan's "We Shall Be Released" and the b-side, "I've Come." Their press release from Mercury Records mentioned a previous album they recorded for another label that was shelved and never released.

When singing their recording contract with Mercury, the band reportedly signed in blood (a common motif of soul-selling stories, a la Faust, Theophilus, etc.) but this was just a hint of the theatrics to come. After securing the deal, Jinx, Oz and Steve, along with a handful of session musicians, recorded what is probably the first album of purely Satanic songs ever recorded, LaVey's Satanic Mass notwithstanding. The LP was entitled Witchcraft Destroys Minds and Reaps Souls. While the occult and Satanism were in the public eye, with LaVey's founding of the Church of Satan in 1966 and a slew of occult books (including The Satanic Bible) an open promotion of the subject had not been attempted, The Stones coming the closest, but even they backed off before they seriously offended people. About the session musicians: In 1967 a band called Aorta released a self-titled album that is now regarded as a psychedelic classic. A man named Jim Donlinger was the leader of Aorta and Coven chose him to mix their Witchcraft LP. He not only arranged the album, he wrote or co-wrote the majority of songs on it as well, played guitar and also sang background vocals.

Another member of Aorta, Jim Nyeholt, played piano and keyboards. Adding to the Aorta family was Bill Traut, who produced not only Witchcraft but Aorta and Shadows of Knight. Donlinger and Nyeholt were members of a Christian band called The Exceptions who recorded an EP in 1966. Apparently, Donlinger went on to perform more Christian music (!) under the name of James Vincent. What he was doing with Coven is anyone's guess and on his webpage, he does not mention Coven or Witchcraft in his "resume." In any case, Mercury took off with the band's Satanic theme. Among the promotional advertisements for the album was "Coven. They just made one hell of an album. They'll destroy your mind and reap your soul."
The songs themselves were good, but standard acid-rock songs. In fact, unlike later bands such as Black Sabbath, Coven's music was just not particuarly atmospheric. Granted, speaking from a 2002 perspective, where we've seen the rise of Black Sabbath, Slayer, the whole black metal genre - I'm sure Witchcraft raised quite a few eyebrows at the time. It is speculated that the musical theatrics were kept to a minimum in order to emphasize Jinx's voice, which is of course possible. What was striking about the album was the overall theme.

The album art was as sinister and Satanic as the lyrics to the songs; the front cover featured Jinx, Steve and Oz against a black background, all three wearing inverted crosses, crowded around a skull. The inside gatefold, however, featured a naked young woman on an altar, a chalice strategically covering her sex. It was bizarre enough, but not illegal - even Playboy was not allowed to show pubic hair in the magazine because it was considered obscene at the time. Incidentally, the woman is not, as popuarly assumed, Jinx. Jinx refused to do it because, according to Donlinger/Vincent, she felt she was too overweight. Women... Also stated is that the album was filled with what appeared to be "authentic" images from the 16th century.
The first side of the record was comprised of Satanic acid-rock songs, while the second side was even more bold, featuring one 15-minute track entitled "Satanic Mass." The band claimed it was an actual recording of a Satanic Mass. Although the liner notes claim that it is the first such recording the band was aware of, Anton LaVey had released an LP (which has since made it to CD) a year earlier entitled Satanic Mass. The inside jacket of Witchcraft cautioned listeners to the potential dangers. "To the best of our knowledge, this is the first Black Mass to be recorded, either in written words or in audio. It is as authentic as hundreds of hours of research in every known source can make it. We do not recommend its use by anyone who has not thoroughly studied Black Magic and is aware of the risks and dangers involved." It also says, "For further information and source material, write: Coven, in care of Dunwich Productions, 25 East Chestnut, Chicago, Illionois 60611."

The album become an underground hit and while it never made any headway on the mainsteam rock n' roll charts, the band received plenty of notoriety for their image. In Chicago, the police forbade the band to say anything in between their songs, although other venues were much more lenient, giving Coven ample room for an elaborate stage show. Quoted in "The Lords of Chaos" by Michael Moynihan and Didrik Soderlind, Oz Osbourne recounts Coven's outrageous stage show. "We did a lot of our album and other things as our stage show, intermixing the Black Mass, or Satanic Mass, as kind of a segueway between the songs. Behind the stage we had an altar and on top of the altar we had what we called a Christian cross and we had one of our road people hanging on the Christian cross as Jesus, and he kind of just stayed there doing the whole show. Our stage was lit with obviously a lot of reds, and we had candles and that kind of thing. Then we would do our whole album and other materials that all dealt with interesting stories of witchcraft. Of course we were costumed ... right at the end of our set we did a Procol Harum song that was just appropriate, called "Walpurgis." And right in the middle of it we break into the "Ave Maria." At that point Jinx would do the benediction of the Black Mass and she'd recite the Latin bits and she would go, "Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the law," which is Crowley ... She'd say the Crowley bit then would hail Satan and would turn around and scream, "Hail Satan!" at the cross and altar, at which point the guy (Jesus) would pull his arms off the cross, get down, invert the cross into the Satanic symbol and would go dancing off the stage while the music was still playing." As Coven became more notorious, they attracted the attention of Anton LaVey. They became a sort of in-house band in the Church of Satan in California, and LaVey planned to form a "Satanic Woodstock" in Detriot on Halloween, wherein Coven would play before LaVey addressed the crowd. It was, unfortunately, cancelled due to controversy.

After a couple months on sale, Coven's Witchcraft album was recalled. Why? Because of an article Esquire magazine was running, entitled "Evil Lurks in California," shortly after the Manson murders. It was about the whole psychedelic Satanism scene in late 60s California, of which Manson was, by that time, the most (in)famous. The article also discussed Head Shops selling Satanic jewelry. To hype the article, Esquire ran a cover with a picture of Manson standing outside a record store in L.A. He had a record under his arm. Guess which record he had? Yup - Witchcraft Destroys Minds and Reaps Souls... As 1970 dawned and Coven had yet to break into the mainstream market, the band signed with a management crew and moved out to California to pursue their now Satan-less caree

Urfaust - Verraterischer, Nichtswurdiger Geist

Artist - Urfaust (NL)
Album - Verraterischer, Nichtswurdiger Geist
Genre - Black Metal
Year - 2005

This band was recommended to me by one of my friends in Hungary. Urfaust, from Asten, The Netherlands, is a project which was started in 1999 by IX. They released their first demo "Urvaterlicher Sagen". In 2003 their first album "Geist ist Teufel" was released. Their second album "Verraterischer, Nichterwurdeiger Geist" was released in 2005.
Verraterischer, Nichterwurdeiger Geist, starts of with the epic track "Dunkel Still Von Ewigkeit" (Dark, silent eternity) which is a 13 minute classical peice of atmospheric keyboards/violins blended with other instruments. Which takes us to my favourite song off the album and which is also the highlight of the album "Ragnarok Mystiker" which is characterized by the insane and clean vocals of IX, mid paced drumming, and chainsaw-ish guitar tones. Which after that brings us to the third track of the album Gespinnst der Verderbens (Web of Destruction) which follows the same vein as "Ragnarok Mystiker" mid paced track and the insane vocals of XI which takes the listener to a trance. Track number four "Trauerhohle" (Cave of Sorrow), follows in the same vein of "Dunkel Still Von Ewigkeit" with the same type of climax. As "Verflucht das Bleden der Erscheinung" (Cursed the blinding of appearance) begins you get to hear the insane laughter of IX, the introduction riff which is very gloomy and sinister, follows through the rest of the track. The buzzing chainsaw-ish guitar tone opens as a 15-20 second intro for "Der Gottesverächter" (The Despiser of God), melodic track compared with the rest of the songs in the album and also the vocals are mostly clean in this track. Which takes us to the 6:50 minute closing track of the album "In Den Weiten Oden Raumen" (In the wide, deserted rooms) another ambient track which follows the viens of the opening track and fourth track, perfect for the closing track, perfect atmosphere, slowly bringing you back from the Trance-like state.

Good Album, a must have if your a black metal/ambient fan. Worth spending your money on. Love it or hate it, Urfaust's Verraterischer, Nichtswurdiger Geist.
